Melvin O. Nelson, Jr. transitioned during the pre dawn hours on May 9, 2016. He was blessed to experience 76 years; more than half of them spent as a devoted husband to Katherine and father extraordinaire to Brandon (Dela), Judith, Helga (Kraig), and Kendra (Orben). Melvin is joining his father Melvin Sr., mother Mildred, and brother, Franklin who were called home earlier. His brother Richard will cherish fond memories along with his loving grand and great grandchildren, Latedra (Zachariah), Candace (Aniya), Sean, Caleb, Kayla, Kyra, and Koren. Also left to celebrate his life are a host of brother and sister in-laws, nieces and nephews. It needs to be noted that his St. Peter's Lutheran Church family who comforted him and unknowingly buoyed his spirits during his final days will miss him as well.
As an esteemed retiree of our nation's Air Force and the Philadelphia Police Department, Melvin lived all aspects of his life with duty and obligation. His name was his brand and as a result, the Nelson label has become synonymous with dignity and respect within the West Oak Lane area and beyond. He was a pillar in the community and will be forever woven into the tapestry of many lives.
The family has respectfully requested private services in accordance to pre-planned wishes expressed by the deceased. However, a tribute will be held on Saturday, May 14, from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm at St. Peter's Lutheran Church for those who would like to share their condolences with the family. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the American Cancer Society in Melvin O. Nelson, Jr.'s honor.
