John Louis Macon

Very quietly and peacefully on Monday, March 26, 2018 Almighty God in his infinite wisdom gently closed the eyes of our beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather & great-grandfather.

John Louis Macon Sr. was born December 12, 1941 in Waverly Alabama, to the late Willie Oscar Macon and Lula P. (Moore) Macon. He was the fourth of 12 siblings.
John received his Lord and Savior at a very early age. The family were members of the First Baptist Church in Gadsden, Alabama. As a teenager, he learned the 66 books of the Bible and could recite them forwards & backwards at will if you asked. He was an avid reader of the Bible, as well as other spiritual books such as the Quran. He loved the Creator of all things. His favorite scripture was John 8:32.

John was educated in the public school system of Gadsden, Alabama graduating from Carver High School in 1959. He later moved to Philadelphia with other family members in 1961. He has many friends and classmates who kept in frequent contact with him throughout the years.
John was was employed by the Edward G. Budd Company at 24th and Hunting Park Avenue on September 4, 1962 where he was gainfully employed for 35 1/2 years as a Welder. He received two prestigious awards for his lengthy employment, a 25 year gold ring and a 35 year gold watch. His closest friends and family gave him a big retirement party at one of his favorite watering holes, the famous Loos n Choos in Philadelphia.

Some of his favorite activities were watching football games, listening to gospel music, bodybuilding, bowling, and playing Tonk with his friends on the job, in which he always talked about how much better he was than most he played against. (Smile) He was very competitive in everything he did and he was very good. Most know him as a straightforward no nonsense person, but if you knew him, you know he cared about you. He loved all of that stuff, but what he mostly loved to do was to go down south to visit his family and his hometown.

John met Judy Tate Mathewson in 1967. She had two children Cecilia and Richard Mathewson.

They were wed in 1974 and from that union, three more children were born: Aliaunda Alia, John Jr. and Virgil Larue Cyprien.

John was preceded in death by seven siblings Rufus Macon, Isabel Oliver, Eddie Lee Barnes, Sylvia Viann Macon, Roosevelt Macon, and Paula Irene Macon. He leaves to mourn his passing, five siblings: Mary L. Key, Lula P. Eberhardt, James Edward Macon, Paulette Ilene Macon, and Celestine Renee Macon. Two daughters in law, Tonya Matthewson, Saneeka Macon, and One Son-in-law Olabisi K. Laniya. There are a host of grands, great-grands, cousins, nieces, nephews, family, and friends who lovingly call him father, brother, uncle, pop pop and friend.
